Help with editing this short story..descriptions mainly (i think)?
any pointers as to where i could improve with this story that i have written (it not finished) i need help with more descriptions like landscaped and how to convey her emotions more. Darling James sat in her worn down old arm chair in front of a blazing fire in the Study. In an almost trance she gaised at the dancing flames and watched them flicker, sending shadows around the room - a crumpled up letter in her hand. she was deep in thought. The house was quiet at this time of night - not one sound apart from fire wood crakeling in the heath. Two years ago Darling would have relished in these moments but now, now she didn't, it gave her time to think. These moments would not let her forget. She was haunted by her past, a past that slowly attacked her mind but she had to be strong for her daughter's sake. What use would a mother be if she were mentally unstable? But then again what kind of mother lied to her children? Darling closed her eyes trying to force out all the bad thoughts and images. She could feel a horrible feeling building up in her stomach. It was guilt and it was coming to get her. It was attempting to destroy her and it was winning. She stood up quickly, placed the letter in a drawer of her Amboyna writing table and hurried over to the window, opening it to let in a some much needed fresh air. She placed her hands on the window sill and supported her self up, bowing her head, letting the cool air wrap around her like a comfortaing blanket. 'i cant do this anymore' she wispered as she shook her head. Resuming her original position she once again walked to her writing table but this time it was to remove a book. It had a beautifully coloured cover decorated in gemstones and had swirling writing imprinted on it in gold leaf and a lock to its side. Darling placed herself onto a wooden chair that accompeened the table, then removed a necklace from around her neck. On the necklace was a small gold key. she placed it in the plam of her soft hands and delicatly ran her fingers across it whilst letting out a large sigh. She used the key to open the book – her diary. she then removed a pen from a jar on the desk and the began to write and write until her hand hurt. Tears were flowing down her pale face; not because of the pain in her hand but because what she had written. For so long she had pretented than none of it had ever happend but she had wrote it down now and in a strange kind of way it conformed what she had believed; what she had felt; what she had done. Darling placed the pen down and sat back into the chair, letting her arms hang heavily to the side of her worn out self. She then stared at a photo placed within a beautiful silver frame,complete with ancient celtic symbols, on her desk. She had always adored the frame. She gotten it as a birthday present from her late husband along with the photo that resided inside it. It was a picture taken by a lakeside in County Clare a year after she had moved to ireland with her husband Seanán, who was oringinaly from dublin. Seanán was a tall, well built man with light ash brown flowing hair, he had a darkened complextion which he called his 'farmers tan', even though he had never worked a day on a farm in his life. he had an extremly handsome face with piecing dark green eyes and worn a cunning smile. To Seanán's left stood Darling. Darling looked curisously at the photograph. Although it was taken over 15 years a go it amazed her how different she looked. she was a young women then, 18 to be exact, she was fresh faced and had the bluest eyes ever imaginable, framing her heart shaped face was long, golden blonde hair than reached all the way down to her hips and curled up at the ends. She was beautiful, imaginative and energetic then, she was but a shell of her former self now. In her arms, rapped in a thick white blanket – but still visable - was a baby girl, her daughter Tara, who it seemed to have inherited her mother striking good looks and bright blue eyes. Darling picked up the frame and with, once again tears flowing down her face, she pressed her lips to the smiling face of Seanán. 'im sorry seanán.' she cried. 'IM SORRY! Sorry for everything. I should never have asked you to do any of this, NEVER! Im sorry. You were the kindest, most loving man i have ever known. I never planned for any of this to happen, I- I- i'll see you soon mo chara' and with that Darling burst into uncontrollable sobbing, she knew what was coming next. She patted her eyes dry after a few moments and then proceeded to take her large, black cloak off the coat rack stationed in the corner of the study beside a small round table. Placed on top of the table was a large willow pattern vase with exactly 7 lilies snuggled together inside. She swung the cloak around her and tied it securly at the neck. before leaving the study she took the diary from her writing table and p placed it in a small cavity under a loose floorboard in the middle of the room. She also removed the tallest lily from the vase on the round table and exited the study.slowly darling crept down the dimly lit hallway and taking a right at the kicten, she headed up stairs towards tara's bedroom. Food for thought, first off you do not have to describe everything into a bore because it is the significance of a scene and its characters that are more important to describe at a time and with the most important details. The small details are the ones that count and by looking at the small details you paint a greater picture for the reader. Also do not spend so much time telling us how she's in pain and grievance for whatever reason but rather show us the lengths she would go to, to stop grieving. Also instead of that lengthy description of the fireplace, the shadows, and walls. You could have said in one sentence "From the kindling fire shadows danced along the studies walls taking shape like the horrible images in her mind, taunting her." You see in one sentence I gave a hint of her fear, imagery, and in the next sentence I would have given her reaction to those dancing shadows.... Dr. Wiz | Read more Christmas is SOON... Hi, Im an international student from Ireland. Im currently in my first semester in Los Angeles City College. I pay a lot for my tuition (like $420 per class) and am wondering if I made the best choice. It seems a bit run down and like no one gives a shit... which isn't helpful for a study frame of mind. Any ideas on colleges in LA that would be better suited to me, with better funding and a more positive attitude? Im currently living close to Silver Lake but am willing to move closer to a college if I transfer. Thanks! :) I know its a relatively small amount to pay for college but this is a 2 year college, residents pay $20 per class. Its like a cheaper stepping-stone to a 'real' 4 year expensive college.
